What garlic varieties do you sell?

We grow six heirloom varieties: Music (Porcelain hardneck), Ukrainian Red (Marbled Purple Stripe hardneck), Georgian Fire (Porcelain hardneck), Donostia Red (Rocambole hardneck), Inchelium Red (Artichoke softneck), and Lorz Italian (Silverskin softneck). All are grown pesticide-free in Coburg, Oregon.

Is your garlic organic?

We farm organically — no synthetic pesticides, no synthetic fertilizers, certified organic inputs, and crop rotation. We hold an Oregon Department of Agriculture nursery license and our seed stock is inspected for white rot. We describe our garlic as naturally grown or pesticide-free rather than certified organic because we have not paid for USDA Organic certification.

What is the difference between hardneck and softneck garlic?

Accepted Answer

Hardneck garlic has a firm central stalk, produces scapes in spring, and has larger cloves with more complex flavor. It stores 4 to 8 months and is the better choice for most Pacific Northwest and northern US growers. Softneck garlic has a pliable stalk (which means you can braid it), more cloves per bulb, and longer storage of 9 to 12 months. Softnecks adapt better to warmer climates.

How much seed garlic do I need?

One pound of seed garlic contains roughly 30 to 50 cloves depending on variety, which plants approximately 25 to 35 feet of row at standard 6-inch spacing. A quarter pound is enough for a small test bed of 8 to 12 cloves per variety. A half pound gives you a solid home garden planting of one variety.

Do you ship to Idaho?

Idaho has plant quarantine restrictions on seed garlic in certain counties. We cannot ship to Ada, Bingham, Blaine, Boise, Bonneville, Canyon, Cassia, Elmore, Gem, Gooding, Jefferson, Jerome, Lincoln, Madison, Minidoka, Owyhee, Payette, Power, Twin Falls, or Washington Counties. How do I plant seed garlic?

Accepted Answer

Plant in fall, 4 to 6 weeks before your ground freezes. Break bulbs into individual cloves just before planting. Set each clove 2 to 3 inches deep, pointed end up, 6 inches apart in rows 12 inches apart. Mulch immediately with 3 to 4 inches of straw. Garlic roots through the winter, emerges in spring, and is ready to harvest in July when the lower 3 to 4 leaves have dried.
